Most high school juniors are either currently in the thick of homework, SATs, and starting to make college visits, or they're in the thick of their fall sports season.
St. Mary - Bay View's Rebecca Curran is right in the middle of both of them. However, today's victory over Mount St. Charles' Taylor McEldowney in the championship match of the RIIL Girls Tennis State Singles Tournament will most certainly give her the extra motivation needed to persevere through these tough times for a teenager, as the responsibilities sometimes increase exponentially.
Curran was on cruise control throughout the entire tourney, only losing a total of two games over the course of her five (best-of-three) matches. She made quick work of McEldowney in the title match, winning the first set, 6-0, in just 21 minutes, and then 6-1 in 29 minutes to take the trophy.
The championship was Bay View's first singles title in the 33 years of the state tourney. With Curran's win, the Bengals also ended up sweeping the entire tournament. Thanks to the team of Victoria Azar and Victoria Babcock, who defeated the Mount St. Charles tandem of Kayla Flynn and Aimme Barone, Bay View captured the state doubles crown as well.
