Weekend football roundup

The Glenbards succeed

By Kent McDill

First, it was Glenbard North on Friday night. Then it was Glenbard West on Saturday afternoon.

The third weekend of high school football in Illinois centered on the Carol Stream-Glen Ellyn area, where two games of significance among the 8A and 7A elite took place.

The rest of the state also saw big results from the games that took place under perfect conditions on the late summer weekend.

At Glenbard North Friday night, the host Panthers blanked highly rated Naperville North 21-0, holding the Huskies to less than 100 yards in the game.

At Glenbard West Saturday, more than 7,000 fans saw the host Hilltoppers beat Hinsdale Central 28-25, sending the Red Devils to their second loss in three games this season. Their first loss came at the hands of Wheaton-Warrenville South.

Carmel gave Marist its first loss of the season with an exciting 36-32 decision Friday. Carmel quarterback Brian Serio threw only three passes on the night but all three were for touchdowns.

In a battle of unbeatens, Casey-Westfield crushed Flora 35-6.

After winning its first two games by a total score of 98-6, Edwardsville finally played a team of its own caliber and lost 27-7 to Belleville East, now unbeaten at 3-0.

With its 32-0 win over Paris Friday, Effingham made it three games in a row without being scored upon.

At Havana, Knoxville edged the host Ducks 14-12 to win another battle of unbeatens. Same for unbeaten Auburn in its 14-7 win over previously unbeaten Petersburg Porta.

Joliet Catholic freshman Ty Isaac ran for 167 yards on just 13 carries and scored twice to lead the Hilltoppers over Nazareth Saturday, giving Nazareth its first loss.
