Week 7 Rankings Remix

Editor's Note: Each Monday, CoachesAid.com serves up the Rankings Remix, a look at the Top 5 teams in football, boys and girls soccer and field hockey in Vermont.

A couple of upsets shuffle the deck in the Week 7 Rankings Remix.

FOOTBALL

In Division I, the top two teams (Essex and BFA-St. Albans) both posted easy wins, but previous No. 3 Burlington drops to fourth and previously-unranked Rutland rejoins the Remix at No. 5. The biggest mover is No. 3 Mount Anthony, which has won two straight, including a 7-6 win over South Burlington.

In Division II, Colchester won convincingly to keep its spot at the top of the Remix. However, previous No. 2 Champlain Valley was shocked at home 14-0 by Milton, sending shockwaves through the division. When the dust settled, Mount Mansfield moved from No. 4 to No. 2, Milton entered the Remix at No. 3, CVU dropped to No. 4 and Middlebury retained it's No. 5 slot.

In Division III, we're not sure if this is the upset of the year, but it's got to be in the mix. No. 2 Bellows Falls knocked off No. 1 Windsor (who opened 5-0, outscoring opponents 233-6 and entered the game with the Terriers with four straight shutouts - whew!). We flip-flopped those two teams and kept Springfield at No. 3. BFA-Fairfax entered the Remix again at No. 4 and Middlebury stays at No. 5.

FIELD HOCKEY

In Division I, CVU and South Burlington kept on winning to retain the top two spots, but Rutland fell twice to drop from No. 3 to No. 5. Mount Anthony advanced from No. 5 to No. 3 and Hartford remained in the No. 4 slot.

In Division II, there was no change at all in the Remix from the previous week.

In Division III, the only change was Missisquoi Valley leapfrogging St. Johnsbury for the No. 3 spot. Rice and Stowe remain 1-2 and North Country checks in again at No. 5.

BOYS SOCCER

In Division I, Champlain Valley takes over the top spot from Essex, based on a 3-1 win on Saturday. Essex slips to No. 2 and Spaulding, Burr and Burton and St. Johnsbury hold their positions rounding out the top five. South Burlington didn't work its way back into the Remix because they are still in the bottom half of the Vermont Principals' Association index points rankings, but the smart money says the Rebels are poised to do some damage. Reports are that for the first time this season the Rebels - which lost the D-I title in OT last season - are healthy and at full strength. Are they in Essex and CVU's class at this point? Time will tell.

In Divison II, Springfield, U-32, Hartford and Mount Abe retain their spots at the top of the Remix and Milton rejoins the fray at No. 5.

In Division III, Stowe is still the top dog, but Peoples moves up to No. 2, followed by Lake Region - which suffered it's first loss, a stunning 4-0 defeat against Hazen Union. Northfield slips to No. 4 and Thetford remains No. 5.

In Division IV, the top five teams all retained their rankings.

GIRLS SOCCER

In Division I, there was no change in the Remix from the previous week.

In Division II, Milton and Green Mountain Valley are still 1-2, but Montpelier surpassed Springfield for the No. 3 position. Harwood remains No. 5.

In Division III, top-ranked Fairfax got another scare from Hazen, but held on for a 2-1 win to remain unbeaten. Peoples keeps the No. 2 spot, followed by unbeaten Mill River at No. 3, Oxbow at No. 4 and Enosburg at No. 5.

In Division, IV, there is no change in the Remix from the previous week.

    In D-I Football I've got:
1- Essex (6-0 overall, 5-0 in the division)
    2- BFA (5-1, 5-1)
    3- Rutland (4-2, 4-1)
    4- Mount Anthony (4-2, 4-2)
    5- Burlington (4-2, 3-2).

BHS has beaten MSJ (worst team in state) and Rice (Division II), so not sure I'd give 'em the fourth sport. Doesn't really matter. We'll find out this week: The Mount Anthony/BHS game this weekend looms basically as a playoff game.

I agree, the Mt. Anthony-BHS game is pivotal. But at this point I can't help but wonder if we should - barring injury - be ranking just the top two teams. They have proven to be clearly better than the rest of the teams in the division so far. That said. anything can happen in a one-game playoff. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. - Shawn
